You still think labels are all that?
April 13, 2007
Several people noticed a suggestion site for Gmail. First, I love it. It’s great to see big companies soliciting user feedback on features and then implementing them (see the sidebar on that page for a list of implemented suggestions).
But I saw something that made me laugh. CyberNet News posted about the suggestion site.
A label hierarchy system would be really great because it would allow me to group similar labels, and this is something that I’ve wanted for a long time. I like having the labels instead of just folders because I can easily apply multiple labels to some messages, but my list of labels is getting too long and I need an easier way to keep my labels organized.
Let me get this straight, your organization system…needs an organization system? I thought labels were supposed to make things easier to find. Now you need labels just to find your labels.

I don’t like the labels function of Gmail. It annoys me and it makes everything more confusing. I think it Folders are great. I love the way Yahoo is progressing

I have a suggestion
First I want to say that I love yahoo–I especially love the way it looks — much more than Gmail.
My suggestion is this: Would it be possible to make it so that we can take notes next to the message? I don’t mean like a label, but for example, when you’re looking at the inbox, you’d see your note next to the subject line, like “Reply this person” or something like that.
Just a thought

b, yeah…it’s funny you mention that because it’s something I’ve been thinking about lately too. I use mail as a todo system, so being able to add notes would be nice.

I would have to say that I love Google’s label (tag) architecture. To me, I find it very intuitive, powerful and easy to use. I would love to tag every piece of data I create.

Why do people see it as label vs folders?
I want both!
Folders are good for organising things hierarchically and tags are good across hierarchies…

Doesn’t yahoo bookmarks do something like tags and folders both together? it seems to work well for bookmarks, and i think it would be helpful for email.

I always am against the labels….
Firstly cos their usage is not consistent..Give me an email, if i tag it with 3 labels now, im sure the next day i will tag it with just two labels..
And secondly Its lot of work…
Labels initailly have the WOW effect, but they don’t seem to justify the hype they were given.
i would go for sub-folders…

Could Y! Mail have a suggestion site too?

I agree with Andy … Labels are different than Folders, and are good for different things. I’d love to see labels/tags added to Yahoo Mail … the “flag” feature is basically a single tag.

There’s a page right here for it:

It’s been hard-to-find for a while but I keep it bookmarked
. I love Yahoo mail and I’m glad to see it evolve as much as it has.
